New Virtual Big Brother program allows brothers to connect and help each other

Most of us can point to that one person whose sage words of advice, unbiased criticism or role model example helped shape us as young men and gave us the life skills necessary to succeed.

The Iowa Beta Alumni Association is pleased to announce a new Virtual Big Brother program, allowing SAE brothers to provide advice and support to other brothers.“

There are many Iowa Beta alumni interested in giving something back to the fraternity but do not have a lot of time to devote or necessarily wish to commit financial resources,” said Iowa Beta Alumni Association President Marc Rosenow. “We now have a program where brothers can help or get help from another brother.”

The Virtual Big Brother program will allow a member of the fraternity to seek advice, provide coaching and mentoring, or gain strength from another brother knowing that he is not alone. He can find a person who has either more experience or who has walked a mile in his shoes whether on a professional or personal level.

Join the Iowa Beta Alumni Association

Joining the Iowa Beta Alumni Association is the primary way that most alumni can become involved and stay informed with their fraternity.

It is fast and easy. And, it is free. No fees required.

The only thing we need you to do is update your contact information at: www.iowabetasae.org. There has been some recent confusion because SAE National is also trying to update their alumni database and they are selling membership directories.

We are on separate databases. Updating information with SAE National is important but it does not automatically flow into our database. Please update your contact information with the Iowa Beta Alumni Association and you will automatically be enrolled as a member in good standing for 2013 – 2014.

Here is why it is important…

Over the course of the last several months, Iowa Beta alumni from diverse decades have worked hard to make you proud of your SAE chapter again and prepare for the chapter’s return to campus in 2016.

To date, we have:

* Created ongoing communications to keep alumni better informed about Iowa Beta developments.

* Restructured the two alumni support groups – the house corporation and the alumni association – to provide stronger focus to their core missions:

* The house corporation is the real estate holding and property management entity

* The Iowa Beta Alumni Association focuses on alumni engagement and outreach, member services, communications, and will serve as the Chapter reinstallation and advisory board.

* Held three separate alumni events in Iowa City and will be holding regionally-based alumni events in the near future

* Secured and customized a more sophisticated membership database, thereby increasing the effectiveness of our services and communications.

* Identified a governance committee chairman, ensuring that all IRS and State of Iowa regulations are followed with respect to not-for-profit organizations.

* Planned for the development of a dynamic formal website, enabling alumni to keep better informed on the progress of Iowa Beta and the activities of our brothers.

Together, we have accomplished a great deal in a short period of time but more work remains to be done. And we need your help.

Please visit: www.iowabetasae.org and complete the online form. We just want to know your name, email address, mailing address, phone number and year of graduation. That is all it takes.

“Clicking on the link and updating or confirming your information is an easy way to show you are engaged and care about the future of the Iowa Beta Chapter,” said Brian Kingery, Director and Chairman, Member Services, Iowa Beta Alumni Association.

“Thank you for your support of Iowa Beta.”

Brothers keep in touch on Facebook

If you need a quick SAE fix or you want to share a fun experience about what is going on in your life, you can always go to the Iowa Beta Facebook page.

Here are brothers Wayne Schwertley, John Crowley and Carrie Shinsako, who got together for some laughs at Merkle’s Bar & Grill in Chicago.

The three brothers were some of the first to inhabit “The Lodge” on Dubuque Street in the early 1980s. Schwertley now hails from Louisville, while Crowley and Shinsako live in the greater Chicago area.

The Facebook page has been a popular site for Iowa Beta brothers for more than a year now and has helped connect brothers for micro reunions like this one.
