Tim Miller elected house corporation treasurer, replaces Steve Cary who retired from the Board

A hallmark of any good organization is succession planning and the ability to successfully transition from one leader to the next without any disruption. The Iowa Beta house corporation is pleased to announce that Tim Miller (IABE '87) has been unanimously elected treasurer, replacing Steve Cary (IABE '92) who has retired from the Board of Directors after serving in various capacities for 18 years. Cary will remain on the Board in an advisory capacity. Miller was elected at the November meeting of the house corporation's Board of Directors.

Tim Miller

Miller, who is originally from Ames, Iowa but now resides in Arizona, has more than 15 years in financial planning and analysis. Most of this work involved building budgets, forecasts, financial models, and understanding the drivers of financial performance. For the past six years he has been with two large law firms that are both in the AmLaw Top 100. Prior to that, Miller spent seven years at CVS Health and a shorter time at a small consulting company.

Miller enrolled at the University of Iowa and pledged the Iowa Beta chapter during his freshman year. He was initiated into the fraternity on December 3, 1983 and received badge number 190558. Miller became very involved in the fraternity and served in numerous roles, including Eminent Archon, Rush Chairman, and Alumni Relations.

"Steve Cary is a genuine Brother Hero and will be difficult to replace," said Randy Iskowitz (IABE '88), president of the house corporation. "But we are very lucky to have someone of Tim Miller's caliber step up and serve the fraternity. Tim is amazingly talented, has a wealth of knowledge, strong attention to detail, and will do a superb job!"

Cary is the co-founder of the house corporation and has served in multiple roles on its Board of Directors over the years, including president from 2005 to 2013. In 2005, Cary took on dual roles as president and treasurer.

Cary, who lives in San Francisco, was instrumental in leading negotiations for the lease agreement with Tau Kappa Epsilon, securing the chapter house for the next few years. Additionally, he was one of the key figures in acquiring the interim house at 700 N. Dubuque (the old Sigma Pi house) prior to reacquiring the SAE house at 303 N. Riverside (now called 302 Ridgeland) in 1996.

During his undergraduate years, Cary served the chapter in many capacities, including Eminent Archon. Cary is the EVP and COO for business development of Handa Pharmaceuticals, LLC, a leading specialty pharmaceutical firm.

Tim and his wife Alexandra

Miller earned an MBA from the University of New Hampshire in 1999, to go along with his degree from the University of Iowa in Business Administration. He is married and has two daughters. The Millers have been living in Rhode Island for 15 years, but have just relocated to the Phoenix area.

"I am very excited to serve Iowa Beta in the house corporation treasurer role," said Miller. "It has been great to see so much progress in rebuilding alumni support, protecting the house and positioning the Chapter for its re-launch in 2016.  I am delighted to be a part of it."

"We all owe Steve Cary a tremendous debt for his years of service.  Steve is the epitome of a True Gentleman," said Marc Rosenow (IABE '86) who serves as alumni association president and as house corporation secretary.  "Tim Miller is a strong leader and a great friend.  He will be a fantastic addition to the house corporation Board."

A look back at 2014: The year in review

For the last two years, the Iowa Beta Alumni Association and the House Corporation have been working hard to keep you proud of Iowa Beta.

Beginning in 2013, the House Corporation was restructured to focus on its core mission of being the real estate holding and property management organization for the chapter house located at 302 Ridgeland (formerly called 303 N. Riverside). Other chapter support functions moved to the Iowa Beta Alumni Association. The chapter house has been temporarily rented to another fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, until the Iowa Beta chapter returns.

During the past year, the house corporation has made numerous repairs to maintain the chapter house premises and made improvements to the property, including enhanced exterior lighting and fencing of the basketball court for safety purposes. Asbestos in the basement, which posed a potential safety issue, was removed by a licensed contractor.

In addition, other improvements to the property including boiler repairs, window replacements, and energy efficiency initiatives -- such as insulation in the attic -- were completed. Further, the refrigerator in the kitchen was replaced and new locks were put on the doors.

The chapter house passed all City of Iowa City and insurance company inspections, met code for existing fraternity structures, and the alarm system was improved to minimize false alarms resulting in police visits. Finally, insurance coverage for the chapter house including property, general liability and Directors & Officers insurance was enhanced.

Being nearly 90 years old, the chapter house is in constant need of repairs and substantial upgrades will need to take place in the future.  However, it remains the beautiful house on the hill that so many brothers were fortunate to live in during their collegiate days.

The Iowa Beta Alumni Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization for the education and development of True Gentlemen.  With over 260 members, it is the second largest alumni group in the SAE realm, and its programs and initiatives rank among the very best in the nation.

During 2014, the Iowa Beta Alumni Association was awarded runner-up status as the best chapter alumni association in the country and received two top awards for outstanding communications and best website.

Additionally, the organization continued to mature and furthered alumni engagement activities, including periodic and regionally focused alumni events and monthly communications.  Further, six Iowa Beta brothers received career opportunities through the alumni association's networking and mentorship initiatives. Finally, due to strong demand, a Friends of Iowa Beta non-member status was created for those who wish to support the Iowa Beta Alumni Association but who are not Iowa Beta alumni.

In 2015, the award-winning website will be refreshed and the alumni association will begin identifying a team to serve on the Chapter Advisory Board as preparations are made for the re-launch of the Iowa Beta chapter in fall 2016.
